    Question

I ordered a MSD boost retard and was wondering if I need it. I am getting a ping in 4th and 5th gear. Should I use the device, our just use my AFC? Only does it sometimes and only in 4th and 5th. This would also let me advance my timing to stock. Does anyone have one or know someone that has? Any input would be great.
    Thanks, John

Sorry man, i have to chime in here. i am really envious of you. i wish i could buy stuff and then ponder whether it was necessary or not until afterwards....

From what I understand, the MSD boost retard should be able to help you. but I am saving for a J&S ultra personally. much more functionality, much more cost. Do a search for it here and at http://bbs.theoldone.com

Sorry to be cynical at first. i am just envious.

I can't see why you would only ping in 4th and 5th gear, if it was due to the boost, it should ping in all gears unless you are talking about part throttle detonation. I wasn't aware that this was a problem with most turbo setups, and as far as I know, most guys just retard their timing at the distributor about 2 degrees and everything runs fine. The BTM won't help out that much with part throttle detonation though since the boost is just barely building, and the BTM only retards timing relative to boost. You should just try to avoid high load on the engine such as flooring the car at low rpms in 4th and 5th gear. If you bought the universal BTM, I would tell you to return it and either just retard the timing at the distributor, or if you're really interested in the unit, I have a used unit that I'm trying to get rid of for 80 dollars or around there. I used it for a few months, but the JR BTC works much better on JRSC cars.

Falcon is right. The J&S is a much better product. Well worth the $. They have a web site too.

    Lightbulb

I think the reason it pings in the higher gears is because of higher boost. I have retarded the timing and switched to colder plugs. I am wanting to run more boost and trying resolve the problem before I do. I don't know much about the J&S unit but, from what I have heard it sounds nice. Does it use a knock sensor and retard timing from that? Really just want to put timing back to stock and run more boost. Does anyone have any ideas?

The reason your getting ping in higher gears is because of the additional strain on the engine. ie: high speeds, longer gears, etc.
